Affandi

Affandi was a self-taught painter whose parents wanted him to be an architect. He died in 1990, but you can visit his family compound where he lived with two wives and three children.

It's a fun space that reminded me of the Dali museum in Figueras, a funhouse Dali designed himself. Affandi was extremely poor and his early works were painted on the backs of scratch paper and rice paper. 

I loved this early self-portrait, a watercolor. 

The sketches have a lot of feeling too. Affandi like to upend conventions. 

Later he developed a technique painting with the tube of oil paint, and sometimes his fingers. 

The pool is great too.

He loved fast cars. 

He's buried on the site, alongside his first wife, who died a year after he did. But the family tradition continues, with paintings by his daughters and grandson.
